This is the first of 4 units of Carthaginian levy infantry for the Zama Project. These boys, along with the Thureophoroi, will form the 1.6m long Carthaginian second line.
These were generously painted by Greg Privat, and retouched (after unfortunately experiencing a good kicking during the crossing) and based by me .
As an experiment I didn't paint the eyes in on this unit. I'd welcome opinions as to whether they would be better with eyes very lightly dotted in, similar to the Numidians, below.

they look great...no need to paint eyes imho...to scale they would not be visible anyhow...welcome to the darkside of not worrying about eyes...now you can spend even more time basing your figs..

Anyhow, don't they say in the films "Don't shoot until you can see the whites of their eyes!"?
Usually, when they say this in movies, this is that they re all going to die anyway. Dien Bien Phu, Isandlwana, Alamo.... That s the kind of stuff you say when you won t have enough ammunitions to fire twice.
Must be able to see them whites, though! :-)
BRB, I think just painting the whites of the eyes is the best thing to do. With dotting the eyes, you risk them looking a lot worse! From further away, you can only see the whites and then you know they have eyes but a black dot may push it over the edge and ruin it slightly, perhaps darkening them too much.
As a result of your blog, i've decided to just paint the whites as I think this looks best.
My Dad gave me a tip when I first started painting. He said for dotting eyes, you should use the tip of a pin or needle (sewing) as it gives you a really precise applicator. So you could do that if you wanted?
